"Looking at the content, the result is that the institutional proposals of the constitutional treaty … are found complete in the Lisbon Treaty, only in a different order and inserted in former treaties," Mr Giscard d'Estaing said.Readers of this blog may remember Giscard d'Estaing making similar statements after the Turnips birth in June of this year. And he should know, he wrote the original constitution. You know, the one that we Dutch are about to get forced down our throats, while constantly hearing it is NOT the constitution.
The former chairman of the European Convention - the body of over a hundred politicians that drafted the 2004 EU constitution – suggests the new more complicated layout was only to avoid putting the treaty to a referendum.
"Above all, it is to avoid having referendum thanks to the fact that the articles are spread out and constitutional vocabulary has been removed," he says
So, why is he repeating it, risking an insurrection in England, Denmark and possibly his own France? Richard North of EU Referendum thinks the reason might be as pedestrian as it is human: Vanity, pure and simple.
Whether that is true or not is an entertaining discussion, but not really to the point. What is more important is this: If the grandfather of the Turnip says the Turnip is the EU Constitution (twice), then our PM, and state secretary Timmermans, and the entire cabinet, are lying. They've lied to the people and, politically more significant, they've lied to parliament. Misinformation of parliament is a political capital offense for which there can only one punishment: dismissal. Who will be the Members of Second Chamber that will take the PM and his cabinet to task for repeating the lie that the Turnip is not the Constitution? Who will be that valiant parliamentarian that will rid us of this merry band of charlatans?
