Lone Survivor

Marcus Luttrell and the other team members
Recently I read Lone Survivor, a book I like to recommend to all Kleinverzet readers. In the book you go with Marcus Luttrell, the writer of the book, right through the Navy Seals training program, including the infamous Hell Week. Then you and his teammates fly in a C-130 to the Hindu Kush in Afghanistan. where the hunt for the Taliban general begins.

It’s not a cozy story. It’s a story that has to be told when you’re the only one left to tell it. It’s a story about young people doing the dirty work nobody else can and most like not wants to do. A story about that vague abstraction called “the war on terror” about which politicians tell us: “we have to hunt down those terrorists”. But that’s easier said than done. In this particular case it meant that they send Marcus and his buddies behind enemy lines to snipe this important Taliban general, instead of just bombing the general and his army to heaven. Thus this story is about these special forces, their skill, mistakes, tactics, enemies and Afghan friends. The story of a mission gone bad, very bad. A personal story, a very personal story. This is about the real deal.

Remember war is hell. The reason people invented the Geneva conventions in the first place. But does anybody really know what that really means when you’re on the battlefield? I say, go read Marcus his book. It’s well written and reads like a fast-paced thriller. It will definitely move you.

For all who have read the book, you will know that Marcus and his team could have survived. If only they had shot those hostile civilians who directed the Taliban to their hiding place. But then this would have been their faith: 10 years for Army sniper for killing Iraqi civilian. This is a sick world, very sick indeed.
