I went calling from house to house in  the British general election of 2005, speaking to people on their own doorsteps, I became immensely dispirited. Time and again, people would start to talk to me about their concerns. Then they would suddenly check themselves and ask "Am I allowed to say that?"

Britain, a country noted for its freedom of speech for centuries, has become a place of timid, conformist  people in fear of the Thought Police.

I recognize that. Moreover, I used to be be one of those. Until I discovered blogs and the blogosphere. Suddenly, I found a plethora of sites and opinions speaking out loud what I would only admit to in the dark whisky hours of the day. It was enormously liberating and empowering to find that what I was so secretly thinking was not crazy, backward or deluded, but actually common sense. Common sense that is banned these days.

There's a noble task for us bloggers and commenters here, I guess: To direct as many as we can towards the blogosphere. Show them they are allowed to think as they do. Show them they are NOT alone in thinking these thoughts. And show the ones that tell them they can't for the bullies they are.
